What Is N-Key Rollover (NKRO)?
Rollover is the number of keys a keyboard can register correctly at the same time. A board with N-key rollover — usually written NKRO — will register every keypress you're holding, no matter how many there are. A board with limited rollover may silently ignore the seventh, eighth, or ninth key you press, which feels like the keyboard "dropping" inputs.
The limits exist for two reasons. First, most keyboards scan keys in a row-and-column matrix; without a diode on every switch, certain three-key corner combinations can produce ghosting, where a key you never touched registers as pressed. NKRO-capable boards add a diode per switch and firmware that scans the entire matrix fast enough to track every key independently.
Second, there's a protocol limit. The USB HID input specification's boot-protocol keyboard report reserves exactly six keycode slots per report, which is why 6-key rollover became the default for ordinary USB keyboards. NKRO boards get around this with extended HID report descriptors — the same specification allows them, manufacturers just have to implement it.
NKRO vs 6-Key Rollover: The Real Difference
A 6-key rollover (6KRO) board registers six non-modifier keys at once, plus modifiers separately — so Ctrl+Shift+W+A+Space plus one more key still works fine. For context, even fast typists rarely overlap more than three or four keys mid-stroke, so 6KRO covers the overwhelming majority of typing without issue.
Where 6 keys genuinely falls short: dense gaming combos, rhythm games with many simultaneous lanes, and chording-style input. It's also worth knowing that most wireless boards drop to roughly 6KRO over Bluetooth, because common Bluetooth HID profiles cap report size. Gaming peripheral manufacturer documentation is usually explicit about this — NKRO claims typically apply to wired USB mode only — so read the fine print before assuming a board is NKRO in the mode you actually use.
How to Run an N-Key Rollover Test Online
You don't need special software to verify rollover — a browser-based n-key rollover test does the job in about two minutes. Start with clean conditions: plug the keyboard directly into a USB port on the PC (skip hubs), use wired mode if it's a hybrid board, and check the manual for a NKRO toggle — many mechanical boards ship with NKRO disabled and enable it with a combo like Fn+N.
Open an online keyboard tester, then press and hold a single key until it lights up on the virtual keyboard. Add keys one at a time, holding each one, and count how many stay lit. Next, hold a few keys and mash an entire row — a proper test also catches ghosting, which shows up as unpressed keys lighting up. Every key you hold should stay highlighted; any key lighting up without being pressed is a fail.
A few caveats from my own testing: your OS and browser intercept certain combos (Alt+Tab, the Windows key, Ctrl+W), so those keys may not display — that's not a keyboard fault. Run the test two or three times, and make sure to test the exact keys your games or shortcuts actually use.
Who Actually Needs NKRO?
Honest answer: fewer people than marketing suggests. If you type, write, or code, 6KRO is more than enough — your fingers simply don't hold six keys down at once during normal typing. NKRO makes no measurable difference to everyday keyboard feel or accuracy.
For gamers, it depends on genre. Most FPS and MOBA combos stay under six keyboard keys. Rhythm games, multi-lane music games, and heavily-bound strategy or macro setups are where NKRO pays off. Manufacturer documentation for gaming boards leans hard on NKRO as a selling point, but I treat any rollover claim as marketing until I've run the online test myself — I've reviewed boards advertising NKRO that dropped keys in wired mode.
My practical advice: at minimum, buy a board with solid anti-ghosting on the keys you actually use. On modern mechanical keyboards, full NKRO costs manufacturers almost nothing, so it's cheap insurance — but verify it with the tester rather than trusting the box.
